Financial Security vs. Fear: Where True Safety Begins

What does it really mean to feel financially secure?
Most of us have been conditioned to think that financial security is all about numbers—how much we earn, save, or invest. And while those things matter, they don’t tell the whole story. Because here’s the truth:
You can have money and still live in fear. You can be in a season of financial stretch and still feel deep peace.
This is something I’ve been reflecting on deeply—both in my own life and in the lives of my clients. It’s the quiet question beneath so many money goals: “Will this finally make me feel safe?”
Spoiler: It usually doesn’t. Not for long.
Where Is Your Security Anchored?
For many, money offers real stability. It can mean being able to handle emergencies, provide for loved ones, and make choices freely. That’s valid.
But for others—no matter how much they accumulate—it’s never enough. Because what they’re truly searching for isn’t more money. It’s certainty. Control. Worthiness. Relational safety. And those can’t be bought.
I once worked with a woman in her seventies who had millions in investments, yet she was terrified to spend any of it. Despite all her wealth, she didn’t feel safe—because she hadn’t learned how to cultivate internal security.
When the Rules Change: A Lesson from Venezuela
My husband’s family is from Venezuela, a country that has faced one of the most intense economic collapses in recent history. With hyperinflation in the thousands, traditional financial advice—like saving for retirement or avoiding debt—doesn’t work the same way.
In Venezuela, people have learned that cash loses value quickly. So they buy physical assets like cars as a better store of value. It’s a smart strategy in their context—one that defies the financial norms we often take for granted.
What Venezuela taught me is this: the rules can change. Even the best-laid plans can fall apart. But what’s much harder to lose is your resilience. Your faith. Your ability to rise again.
What Mother Teresa Taught Me About Security
I’ve been reading Where There is Love, There is God, a beautiful collection of teachings from Mother Teresa. One reflection that moved me deeply was her take on the Beatitude: “Blessed are the poor in spirit.”
For a long time, I didn’t understand what that meant. But she explains that those who are poor in spirit often experience deep closeness to God—because they have nothing else to cling to. In their emptiness, they make space for grace.
That is what real security is. Not control over outcomes, but surrender. Not constant striving, but trust.
The Illusion of Financial Security
As a financial coach, I absolutely believe in practical strategy. You should:
Know your numbers
Invest wisely
Protect what you’ve built
But I’ve seen too many people do everything right on paper—and still feel anxious.
Why? Because money is not a feeling. Security is! And feelings are created by your thoughts.
Generating Security from Within
Tony Robbins teaches that even shifting your physical stance—shoulders back, chest lifted—can create an internal sense of confidence and safety.
Try it.Take a deep breath.Feel your feet on the ground. And say:
I am safe.
I can handle anything.
I can do hard things.
These aren’t just affirmations. They’re seeds of resilience.
When we create inner safety, we’re able to make bold moves. We take risks. We invest in ourselves. We keep going, even when the road is uncertain.
Fear and Delay
So many people delay their growth because they’re waiting to feel “secure enough” first. But the irony? The very things they’re putting off—coaching, support, bold decisions—are often the key to generating more peace, income, and confidence.
Here’s the mindset shift:
Don’t wait for security to make moves.Make moves from your own sense of security.
Four Ways to Build Inner and Outer Security
Know Your Numbers.Understand your income, expenses, net worth, savings rate, and debt payoff plan. Clarity breeds confidence.
Examine Your Thoughts. What do you believe about money, yourself, and your future? Are those beliefs empowering—or fear-based?
Build Safety in Your Body.Ground yourself through breath, movement, and nervous system care. Remind yourself: You’re not in danger.
Take Aligned Action. What’s one decision you’ve been avoiding because of fear? Take it. Action is the antidote to anxiety.
Redefining Financial Security
Security isn’t about having enough to avoid problems. It’s about knowing you are enough to face them.
It’s about faith—in yourself, in God, in what’s unseen but still holding you.
So if you’ve been waiting to feel more “secure” before making your next financial move, I invite you to challenge that today. The safety you’re searching for starts with your thoughts, your breath, and your belief in yourself.
